
Duo Montagnard, a saxophone and guitar combo who have given concerts worldwide, will perform at Finger Lakes Community College Thursday, Nov. 15, at 12:30 p.m.The free performance will be in room B355 on the third floor of the FLCC main building, 3325 Marvin Sands Drive in Canandaigua. Visitors should arrive early to allow for parking. Handicap and general parking lots are located in front of the college with overflow parking in the Constellation Brands Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center.
The Duo Montagnard, comprised of Joseph Murphy on the saxophone and Matthew Slotkin playing guitar, specializes in contemporary compositions that feature a wide array of styles from jazz, classical and modern genres. The FLCC program will highlight original works by living American composers such as Russell Peterson and Laura M. Kramer.
The duo has performed in 11 countries on five continents, including Canada, Australia, Thailand, Argentina, Greece, Portugal and the United Kingdom. Festival performances include the Chautauqua Institution, Scandinavian Saxophone Festival, Hartwick College Summer Music Festival, UNC-Wilmington New Music for Guitar and Saxophone Festival and the Alexandria Guitar Festival.
Saxophonist Joseph Murphy has been a music professor at Mansfield University of Pennsylvania since 1987, where he also served as department chair. He received his bachelor’s degree in music from Bowling Green State University in Ohio and master’s of music and doctoral of musical arts degrees from Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill. As a recipient of the1985-86 Fulbright Award, Murphy studied for a year in Bordeaux, France and received the Premier Prix, Conservatoire Nationale de Bordeaux. He has commissioned and premiered new compositions for the saxophone and gives master classes.
Guitarist Matthew Slotkin received his doctorial, master’s and bachelor’s degrees from the Eastman School of Music and taught at SUNY Buffalo and Alfred University. He studied under Nicholas Goluses, professor of guitar and director of the guitar programs at the Eastman, who describes Slotkin as “… a highly dedicated and talented musician. He possesses a refined technique with an elegant tone on the guitar. . . .one of the most well-rounded talents in the country." Currently Slotkin directs the guitar program at Bloomsburg University in Bloomsburg, Pa. Like his Duo Montagnard counterpart, Slotkin has premiered compositions and gives master classes worldwide.
