"Stop the Violence, Save the Vote: Parent and Youth March"
Saturday, Aug. 25, 2012, 12 noon
Called by Detroit Rainbow PUSH and Highland Park NAACP. Endorsed and Supported by Southeast Michigan Jobs with Justice
March starts at the McGregor Library, 12244 Woodward Ave., Highland Park, 48203. It proceeds north on Woodward Ave. to Oppenheimer Park, 750 St. Louis, Ferndale, just north of Eight Mile Road.
We march in the wake of the destruction of democracy by Public Act 4 (The Emergency Manager Law), the massive manufacturing jobs loss, escalating youth violence, and growing poverty.
On Aug, 25, 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. led the March on Washington where he made his "I Have a Dream" speech. Forty-nine years later, we still have a dream. Forty-nine years ago, the slogan was "Freedom and Jobs." Forty-nine years later, we still have the same goals.
We march for: 1. Urban reinvestment and economic recovery 2. An end to fraudulent foreclosure practices 3. Support of small businesses 4. Educational and recreational opportunities for our youth 5. Protecting our voting rights 6. An end to "Stand Your Ground" Laws 7. Reviving the ban on Assault Weapons 8. Ending zero tolerance school expulsion and truancy policies 9. Challenging the persistent sickness of racial prejudice that creates systemic poverty and resists pathways to American citizenship
