New FLCC scholarship goes to Navy veteran

Troy Knapp, left, with Lauren and Brian Kolb
Finger Lakes Community College recognized dozens of scholarship winners and their benefactors during the 28th Annual Constellation Brands Scholarship Dinner on Tuesday, Sept. 18.
Eighty-four students received a total of $85,660 in private scholarships this year through the FLCC Foundation, a private not-for-profit that supports college activities. About half were able to attend in person and meet with the scholarship donors.
Among the newest scholarships is the $1,000 Brian Kolb Leadership Award, started this year by friends of Assembly Minority Leader Brian Kolb to support a student leader. The first recipient is Troy Knapp of Farmington, president of the Student Veterans Club since fall 2011. He also assumed the role of chair of the FLCC Student Senate this month.
Knapp served as an aviation ordnanceman in the Navy from February 1996 to February 2004, achieving the rank of Petty Officer Second Class. He deployed twice for six-month tours in 1997 and 1999 in the Arabian Gulf in support of Operation Southern Watch. The award helps Knapp make the most of his military benefits. “This scholarship allows for me to not use G.I. Bill funds, which in turn allows me to use them at a four-year institution upon transfer,” said Knapp. He plans to graduate from FLCC in December with a liberal arts transfer degree. He would like to pursue a bachelor’s degree in economics or finance. The privately funded FLCC Foundation scholarships are presented to part- and full-time students entering or returning to FLCC this fall or those who transferred to four-year colleges and universities. Students apply for and are selected to receive the awards based on a variety of criteria relating to major, grade point average and intended occupation. The awards range from $200 to full tuition, currently $3,654 per year.To create a new scholarship or donate to an existing fund, contact the FLCC Foundation at (585) 785-1541 or email to foundation@flcc.edu.The 2012-13 scholarship recipients by county are as follows:BROOME COUNTYDeposit: Andrea  Davis, Amy Steverson Memorial Scholarship and FLCC President’s Scholarship                        CAYUGA COUNTYAuburn: Joseph Xamountry, Fraley Family Scholarship Cayuga: Nora Conneely, Massage Therapy ScholarshipERIE COUNTYHolland: Derrick Tuttle, Francis Finnick Memorial Conservation ScholarshipLIVINGSTON COUNTYDansville: Eric Fox, Robert L.
