How to Make a Gas Mask with Notebook Paper and Other Lessons I Learned the Hard Way


A newspaper columnist will share on-the-job lessons during a visit to FLCC on Oct. 2Erica Bryant, weekly columnist for the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle and the recipient of the 2010-2011 New York News Publishers Association Award for Distinguished Column Writing, will be the featured speaker on Tuesday, Oct. 2, in the Finger Lakes Community College auditorium on the Canandaigua campus. Students, faculty, staff, and community members are invited to the free 10 a.m. talk titled “How to Make a Gas Mask with Notebook Paper and Other Lessons I Learned the Hard Way.” Visitors will have an opportunity to meet Bryant after her talk.Previously an education reporter and an editorial writer at the Democrat and Chronicle, Bryant currently writes a weekly opinion column for the paper. Her work focuses on life in the city of Rochester and its schools.A graduate of Our Lady of Mercy High School in Rochester in 1999, Bryant attended Boston University where she majored in English and French literature. This will be the ninth year the FLCC Department of Developmental Studies has brought a professional writer to the campus to speak about reading and writing. The Meet an Author Event takes place on Activities Day when classes are not in session to allow students the chance to participate in a variety of discussions, workshops, and off-campus events.
