Capital City Cultivation: Gardens and Farms in Lansing Saturday, September 22nd, , 9am-3pm Check out the exciting urban farming movement that is spreading throughout our State's capitol. This will be a great opportunity to share ideas and tour community developed and organized farms such as Hunter Park Garden House, Urbandale Farm, and the Landbank Garden Project. These farms will inspire and reveal ways in which blighted neighborhoods can be revitalized through community gardening.

The Detroit City Planning Commission and Detroit Food Policy Council invite you to join them for a discussion of the proposed Urban Agriculture Ordinance. This is your opportunity to see the ordinance, ask questions, and give you feedback before the final draft of the ordinance goes before the City Planning Commission and City Council. 

 

The urban agriculture ordinance will allow gardens, farms and other types of agriculture in the city and define ruls for operation in specific zoning districts.

Root cellaring is a traditional technique that uses controlled temperature and moisture to keep food fresh long after it's been harvested without the use of electricity. In this class we will show you how to convert your basement or cellar into a safe haven for your root veggies.

2012 City Chickens Series UPCOMING CLASSES

 

  PLEASE NOTE: Upcoming Chicken Class for Sunday September 22nd,"Slaughtering and Processing Chickens" has been rescheduled for Sunday October 7th. More details to come!

 

 

Slaughtering and Processing ChickensSunday, October 7th, location to be announced. Culling (removing) old or sick birds is an important part of maintaining a healthy and productive flock. Beyond that, the flavor and thrift of home grown meat can't be beat. This hands-on demonstration will cover the tools and techniques to safely and humanely process poultry, including how to slaughter, pluck, and clean your birds. We will be travelling to Hampshire Farms. This class is strictly RSVP, flock owners can bring one of their own birds for processing. To RSVP call Kido at 313-285-1256.

This engaging workshop aims, through hands on activities, to teach school garden organizers, teachers, and administrators how to make the most out of their outdoor classrooms. Topics will include: gardening through the seasons, outreach tips, foundational nutrition basics, and how to incorporate nutrition education into your gardening project. Earthworks is a program of the Capuchin Soup Kitchen, whose mission is to help create a just and beautiful food system. Earthworks promotes sustainable agricultural practices, nutrition education, youth entrepreneurship, media justice and local youth and adult leadership development and ownership of Detroit's food system.

The dinner will feature locally-grown produce and locally prepared food.  The dinner is a celebration of the year's work and bounty. It serves as a way to reflect on the essential life connections we have between each of ourselves and our food. Through the act of breaking bread, we fully recognize how interconnected and interdependent we are on each other and nature.
