Eighty-four students received a total of $85,660 in private scholarships this year through the FLCC Foundation, a private not-for-profit that supports college activities. About half were able to attend in person and meet with the scholarship donors.
Among the newest scholarships is the $1,000 Brian Kolb Leadership Award, started this year by friends of Assembly Minority Leader Brian Kolb to support a student leader. The first recipient is Troy Knapp of Farmington, president of the Student Veterans Club since fall 2011. He also assumed the role of chair of the FLCC Student Senate this month.
Knapp served as an aviation ordnanceman in the Navy from February 1996 to February 2004, achieving the rank of Petty Officer Second Class. He deployed twice for six-month tours in 1997 and 1999 in the Arabian Gulf in support of Operation Southern Watch.
