A recruiter on a national tour to give advice to job seekers will make a stop at Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigua on Wednesday, Oct. 10.Abby Kohut, president of Staffing Symphony, writes about job search strategies online as Absolutely Abby (www.absolutelyabby.com). She will begin a national tour, called Abby Across America, late this month in Boston to educate one million jobs seekers on the reasons people do and don’t get hired. Her presentation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. in Stage 14 on the second floor of the FLCC Student Center, 3325 Marvin Sands Drive, Canandaigua. Visitors should arrive early to allow for parking. Handicap and regular parking lots are located in front of the college with overflow parking in the Constellation Brands Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center. Kohut’s talk is free, but those who plan to attend are asked to email their names and contact information to the Finger Lakes Workforce Investment Board at flwib@rochester.rr.com or call (315) 789-3131, ext 101.Abby Kohut’s presentation runs from 3 to 4:30 p.m., followed by a 30-minute question-and-answer session.Kohut began her career in computer sales, but her affinity for hiring and mentoring new sales reps prompted a new focus on human resources and career development.Among her first projects was the recruitment of 500 employees over two years for Cheyenne Software, doubling the size of the company. Kohut then spent seven years at the Kaplan Inc. educational services company. There, she led recruitment teams that hired 50 customer service representatives in two months and 900 part-time K-12 teachers in four months.Today, Kohut shares her insight as a recruiter in columns in print and online and in TV and radio interviews, citing what she calls detrimental yet correctable mistakes job seekers make. Her visit to FLCC is a joint project of the college and Finger Lakes Works, which provides One Stop job resource centers in Geneva (315-789-1771), Hopewell (585-396-4020), Lyons (315-946-7270) Penn Yan (315-536-5140) and Waterloo (315-539-1905).
